Context
ON LIGHT has been lighting the Sanctuaire du Saint-Sacrement in Montreal since 2011, one of its very first projects. The challenge: lighting the century-old oil-painted frescoes without exposing them to the UV of traditional halogens, at a time when LED wasn’t yet widespread. ON LIGHT met this with powerful, UV-free fixtures.
One challenge remained: the LEDs of that era couldn’t be dimmed, only turned on or off. In 2021, a BACK2LIFΞ update added 0-10V dimming to the same fixtures.

Solution
The recessed fixtures on the ceiling are all Carda: 8700 lumens, 2700K, SP 15° reflector, to reach the room’s imposing height. The Micro spotlights, some of which had previously been poorly positioned and partly hidden behind columns, were also taken down, refurbished, and repositioned for optimal coverage of the frescoes and altar.
Result: lighting that’s both powerful and compact, matching the scale of the space, able to dim and create distinct lighting scenes for different moments, while continuing to protect the century-old oil paintings adorning the sanctuary. The same fixtures installed in 2011 could be refurbished rather than fully replaced, cutting cost and waste.
